ABSTRACT. This paper examines the properties of the so called Tarascan's "benefactive" suffixes: -ku for third person and -chi for first and second persons. I argue that despite the person reference implicit in these suffixes, they are applicative morphemes without pronominal or agreement functions. The data suggest that -ku and -chi add a syntactic object position and that Tarascan's applicatives indicate the event is directed away from the subject's domain. These properties explain the distribution and morphosyntactic behavior of Tarascan's applicatives: a) the ungrammaticality of verb stems with -ku or -chi plus the reciprocal or the passive morphemes is explained by the fact that those suffixes create a syntactic object position; therefore allomorphs of -ku / -chi are necessary in order to passivize or reciprocalize a verb stem with an applicative morpheme; b) they cannot combine with the reflexive suffix because in the reflexive, the event remains in the subject's domain, and hence, it is not possible to use -ku / -chi or any of their allomorphs. * Introduction.
